Lecturer:
Prof. Dr. Markus Merkel
Aalen University, Germany

Merkel studied mechanical engineering at University Erlangen-Nuremberg (Germany). After his PhD, where he worked on the Boundary Element Method in the field of structural analysis he was employed at GM Europe at International Technical Development Centre in Rüsselsheim (Germany). Since 2004 he is professor at Aalen University. He is heading the centre for virtual product development. Special interests are design and optimization by simulation.

Within the traditional engineering process typical milestones are named as design, prototyping, manufacturing or quality assurance. Within the virtual engineering process all steps are implemented as a software tool. The reverse engineering process covers all those areas but with another order. Often computer tomography or optical scanning techniques are used to digitalize an existing hardware component. The main objective is to generate an intelligent CAD-model out of the set of millions unrelated points.
Traditional software tools provide models with limited functionality. State-of-the-art tools allow surface and volume recreation with all features needed for a flexible CAD-model. A parameter based model is obligatory for any CAX- optimization process.
The reverse engineering process is demonstrated by several examples taken from different areas like mechanical and medical engineering or plastic arts. A detailed description is given for raw data and cad model generation, CAE-simulation and rapid prototyping.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND ?
The course is aimed at engineers/scientists who are involved in the (re)-modelling of components or structures on the basis of measured data. Participants are assumed to have basic knowledge of 3D CAD modelling and structural mechanics. Some knowledge of numerical simulation is an advantage, but not essential, as an overview as will be included in the course.

ADVANCED COURSES
BENEFITS OF ATTENDING THE COURSE

Persons who have attended the course and followed the material should benefit in strengthening their background in the following areas:

- A strong understanding of the complete virtual engineering process. Starting from a cloud of unrelated points surfaces and volumes can be created with a defined functionality and accuracy. An essential objective is to project this global requirements onto each substep. The time (this means money for commercial use) to set up a model with requested requirements mainly depends on a well balanced definition of the subproblems.

- Overview software and hardware. The processing of proper CAD-models requires a set of cooperating software tools with corresponding interfaces to transfer digital data from one system to another. In order to avoid partial loss of information or misunderstanding of data enforces a proper combination of all involved tools.
